Carver Knowles has successfully secured a £55,000 Rural Enterprise Grant through Advantage West Midlands for the development of a green waste composting facility.

 

Advantage West Midlands is the Regional Development Agency covering the West Midlands area and provides funding for sustainable economic developments. There is a budget of £300 million to help fund 2,500 active projects in the area. Rural projects like the green waste site can be specifically funded through the Rural Enterprise Grant, which is administrated through Herefordshire County Council. The Rural Enterprise Grant offers funding for 40% of the overall capital costs of a project up to a maximum of £62,500.

 

The green waste facility is located on the Gloucestershire/ Worcestershire border and will provide a service for local and regional businesses throughout the two counties. Green waste products include garden trimmings, tree cuttings and paper pulp which will be processed at the site before being spread on surrounding farmland. 

 

The replacement of artificial fertiliser with organic compost has many benefits and is a far greener option for the surrounding environment. With reduced levels of leaching, organic compost is retained longer in the soil and therefore has an improved long term effect on the nutrient levels in the soil

 

Offering the composting facility to local businesses will help to reduce the amount of waste currently going into local land fill sites. Businesses are currently charged by the tonne for the amount of waste they put into landfill. By providing this facility at a reduced cost, green waste composting is helping the environment and is cost effective to local businesses.

 

This project is one of a number of similar schemes in the area that Carver Knowles is currently handling through from the drawing board to commissioning.
