UK milk production - February 2008

by Tony Carver
March 10, 2008

The figures released by the RPA for the month of February put volume deliveries at 1,043.2ml. This is up on last year by 23.1ml however this year’s figure includes 29th February. Leap year production is scaled down based on production in both February and March, however on the basis of current production output will be adjusted to c1,007.2ml – approximately 13ml less than last year.

Butterfat for the month was 2points higher than 2006/07 leaving the cumulative situation 2 points up at 4.05%.

QUOTA MARKET

Despite the absence of much trade the supply of quota to sell has virtually evaporated. The deals that are being done are being agreed at between 0.8 & 1ppl depending on butterfat. Use has no impact on price at all hence the absence of any leasing transactions other that by a few direct sellers protecting their position.

PERMANENT CONVERSIONS

With 31st December being the final date for the submission of applications for the permanent conversion of milk quota from wholesale to direct sales and vice versa it is interesting to note it is probable there will be a net increase in direct sales quota this year.

According to the RPA’s latest statistics there have been 34 applications from those seeking to exchange wholesale for direct sales compared to only 11 the other way round.

From the 38 that had been authorised there was a net loss from wholesale of 6.788ml. The first occasion of a swing in this direction since 1994.
